Silver & Bronze Jewellery Cleaning Tips

Updated: Jul 31

Hello and welcome to my Friendly Frog blog

If you’ve visited my website or follow me on Instagram (@friendlyfrog2067), you’ll know that my jewellery is made from Fine Silver and Bronze. Here are some simple tips to help keep it sparkling like new.

How do I clean my Fine Silver Jewellery?

  • Mix - a few drops of mild dishwashing liquid to a bowl of warm water

  • Soak - for 10 to 30 minutes to loosen oils and dirt

  • Clean - use a very soft bristled toothbrush to gently remove dirt

  • Rinse & Dry - rinse thoroughly with tap water and dry with a soft cloth

Fine silver can tarnish, but it happens much slower and less severely than with sterling silver. Because fine silver is 99.9% pure (marked as .999), it lacks the high copper content that typically accelerates heavy black tarnishing in other silver items. Over long periods, however, it will still react with airborne elements to form a dull layer.

How do I clean my Bronze Jewellery?

  • Mix – add a few drops of mild, unscented soap to a bowl of warm lukewarm water

  • Wipe Gently – with a soft cloth or soft bristled toothbrush dipped in the soapy water and rub / brush gently

  • Rinse – run under clean water to remove all soap residue

  • Dry – pat the metal completely dry with a soft cloth.  Residual moisture will accelerate future tarnishing

If your bronze jewellery is heavily tarnished make up a paste using baking soda and lemon juice to dissolve easily. Because bronze naturally oxidizes when exposed to oxygen, sweat, and skin oils, regular gentle cleaning is key to keeping its warm, golden glow intact.

Quite often I am asked what is the difference between Fine Silver and Sterling Silver and which is better. They are both good, personally I prefer Fine Silver.

Fine Silver – (.999)

·         Purity – 99.9% pure silver

·         Tarnish Rate – Very slow and mild

·         Durability – Very soft, and can dent easily

Sterling Silver – (.925)

·         Purity – 92.5% silver, 7.5% copper

·         Tarnish Rate – Rapid and deep black

·         Durability – Strong, perfect for daily wear
